The Blurb

The person you trust most may only be telling you half the story …
Fast-paced, suspenseful, this is a book with more twists than a helter-skelter that will keep
you reading late into the night. Perfect for fans of Before I Go to Sleep and Gone Girl.
Sue Jackson has the perfect family but when her teenage daughter Charlotte deliberately steps
in front of a bus and ends up in a coma she is forced to face a very dark reality.
Retracing her daughter’s steps she finds a horrifying entry in Charlotte’s diary and is forced to head deep into Charlotte’s private world. In her hunt for evidence, Sue begins to mistrust everyone close to her daughter and she’s forced to look further, into the depths of her own past.
There is a lot that Sue doesn’t know about Charlotte’s life. But then there’s a lot that Charlotte doesn’t know about Sue’s …

My Thoughts

I find all the books I read by looking at twitter and goodreads, I never read reviews and dont use Net Gallery et al. I found this book after seeing an advert for C.L. Taylors newest book.
That hadn't been released so I bought this one instead and I am so glad I did.
This book was a absolutely fantastic and enjoyable read. The chapters where we read Sues diary were heartbreaking. The plot was great and fast paced and kept me wanting to find out more, but I was a little disappointed with the ending but that is me being very picky. I am looking forward to reading more from the author.

The Blurb

Her eyes are wide open. Her lips parted as if to speak. Her dead body frozen in the ice…She is not the only one.

When a young boy discovers the body of a woman beneath a thick sheet of ice in a South London park, Detective Erika Foster is called in to lead the murder investigation.

The victim, a beautiful young socialite, appeared to have the perfect life. Yet when Erika begins to dig deeper, she starts to connect the dots between the murder and the killings of three prostitutes, all found strangled, hands bound and dumped in water around London.

What dark secrets is the girl in the ice hiding?

As Erika inches closer to uncovering the truth, the killer is closing in on Erika.

The last investigation Erika led went badly wrong… resulting in the death of her husband. With her career hanging by a thread, Erika must now battle her own personal demons as well as a killer more deadly than any she’s faced before. But will she get to him before he strikes again?

My Thoughts

There are a lot of this type of book about at the moment and a lot of them fail to hit the mark with poor characterization, poor plots and repetitive rambling.
Not this one. Robert Bryndza has created a potentially great character in Erika Foster. I absolutely loved her from the very start and was rooting for her all the way.
All of the characters were written superbly and they all bought out different emotions in me. Ok, the plot wasn't anything new and It was quite easy to guess who it actually was but I can forgive that because I really enjoyed being transported to the world of DCI Erika Foster.

Book 10 - Blood Mist - Mark Roberts

Kindle Edition

The Blurb

Two massacred families, with signs of ritual killings.
A nine-year-old-child, abandoned in the snow.
An imprisoned murderer, holding information he wont give up.

As Liverpool holds its breath, DCI Eve Clay hunts a sadistic killer who knows more about her past than she does.
Her search will take her down into the tunnels beneath Liverpool, boarded up and forgotten since World War 2. There, deep underground, she will come face to face with true evil for the first time.

My Thoughts

Its not the worst 99p I have ever spent but Unfortunately this book wasn't for me. I didn't take to DCI Eve Clay at all, she was all over the place and turns out she was some kind of figurehead for a crazed cult whose leader,Adrian White, was in jail (bit too much Silence of the Lambs) was too far fetched for me to enjoy.
The action parts are few and far between but they are well written. The bits where we read her thoughts did nothing for me and the decoding of Adrian Whites book was drawn out and boring to read. I didn't like the ending either drawn out and I couldn't suspend my disbelief quite as much as needed.

Book 9 - Evil Games - Angela Marsons

Kindle Edition

Cost: 1.99

The Blurb

The greater the Evil, the more deadly the game…
When a rapist is found mutilated in a brutal attack, Detective Kim Stone and her team are called in to bring a swift resolution. But, as more vengeful killings come to light, it soon becomes clear that there is someone far more sinister at work.

With the investigation quickly gathering momentum, Kim finds herself exposed to great danger and in the sights of a lethal individual undertaking their own twisted experiment.

Up against a sociopath who seems to know her every weakness, for Detective Stone, each move she makes could be deadly. As the body count starts to mount, Kim will have to dig deeper than ever before to stop the killing. And this time - it’s personal.

My Thoughts

Without doubt Angela Marsons knows how to write a good Crime Thriller. DI Kim Stone is a fantastic creation she has her flaws and one hell of a back story but without the cliches that are found in a lot of this genre of novel.

The book has 2 storylines that are both dark and brilliantly written and her Nemesis Dr. Alexandra Thorne is written so well it made me feel dirty when I read her parts.

This was one hell of a book, one that i didn't want to end.

Book 8 - For All Our Sins - T.M.E Walsh

Kindle Edition

The Blurb

Years ago there was a silent witness to an act of evil. Now, a twisted killer is on the loose fuelled by revenge.

Called to the brutal murder of a priest, it is immediately clear to DCI Claire Winters that the victims death was prolonged, agonising…and motivated by a lust for revenge.

The killer has been clever, there are no clues, no leads. But Claire Winters has never let a killer remain on the streets. Looking for an answer at any cost Claire begins to get closer to the victim’s family, but what it reveals turns her murder case into something far more sinister…

When one body becomes two, and then three, Claire finds herself in a race against time to connect the dots between a host of devastating secrets, before the killer strikes again.

My Thoughts

I came across this book whilst looking for new books on Amazon, it was cheap and I liked the sound of the plot and I love a good twist and as the tag line was "For All Our Sins: A gripping thriller with a killer twist so I parted with my 99p and gave it a go.

If I am totally honest I hated the first half of the book, reading it felt like I had joined a book half way through, it was as if I should have known some of the characters and their backgrounds. The Priests were particularly annoying to read. There was also a lot of filler with background detail about DCI Claire Winters that wasn't needed and added nothing to the story at all.

For me the killer twist didn't exist. It was spoon-fed to you. The second half was a lot better and I enjoyed the action, it kept me engaged and was well written.

T.M.E Walsh certainly isn't on my avoid list by any means and I will give the second book a read.

Book 7 - The Darkest Secret - Alex Marwood

Kindle Edition

Cost: 4.99

Publisher: Sphere

The Blurb

Apologies for the general email, but I desperately need your help.

My goddaughter, Coco Jackson, disappeared from her family's holiday home in Bournemouth on the night of Sunday/Monday August 29/30th, the bank holiday weekend just gone. Coco is three years old.

When identical twin Coco goes missing during a family celebration, there is a media frenzy. Her parents are rich and influential, as are the friends they were with at their holiday home by the sea.

But what really happened to Coco?

Over two intense weekends - the first when Coco goes missing and the second twelve years later at the funeral of her father - the darkest of secrets will gradually be revealed...

My Thoughts

An absolutely outstanding book from start to finish. With a great plot, that some may argue has parallels with the Maddie Mcann disappearance, this was well thought out, well written and full of twists which came from nowhere and had me wanting more. The Characters were a hateful bunch which is a great testament to the writing of Alex Marwood, Its not an easy thing to write a book full of characters that can give the reader such tempestuous feelings towards them.
The ending was just stunningly good. Not what I was expecting at all and I dont believe anyone who says they worked out the ending beforehand.

Book 6 - The Lost - Claire McGowan

Kindle Edition

Cost: 3.99

Publisher: Headline

Published: 11/04/13

The Blurb

"Not everyone who's missing is lost
When two teenage girls go missing along the Irish border, forensic psychologist Paula Maguire has to return to the home town she left years before. Swirling with rumour and secrets, the town is gripped by fear of a serial killer. But the truth could be even darker.

Not everyone who's lost wants to be found
Surrounded by people and places she tried to forget, Paula digs into the cases as the truth twists further away. What's the link with two other disappearances from 1985? And why does everything lead back to the town's dark past- including the reasons her own mother went missing years before?

Nothing is what it seems
As the shocking truth is revealed, Paula learns that sometimes, it's better not to find what you've lost."

My Thoughts

This book has taught me a very important lesson. That lesson is not believe the hype. Having lots of 4/5 star reviews and I liked the sound of the plot so I was expecting something a bit better than a book full of clichés.

Its very repetitive and overpopulated with every character having someone die or go missing in tragic circumstances. It was a bit too much of a struggle to keep up with who had which tragic past.

I never took to the Paula McGuire, yet another maverick working for the Police but not actually a Police Officer. That didn't stop her haring off here there and everywhere trying to solve the crime, making the Police force look inept and a pointless part of the book.

I liked the plot but that was about it. Felt like I had watched an Eastenders Christmas double bill after finishing it. Lots going on but far fetched, repetitive and far too long.
